POLICIES

Formatting

We use the Track Changes feature in Word so you can accept and reject edits individually and you’ll always know what we’ve changed. All page estimates are based on the industry standard: 250 words per page. Please use standard formatting as well: 1-inch margins, double spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font. Unless otherwise agreed upon, queries may be up to one (1) page with standard formatting, and synopses may be up to two (2) pages with standard formatting. If materials do not use these guidelines, the formatting will be corrected at no additional charge but may affect page counts in partial critiques. For edits, all materials must be sent as Word attachments unless otherwise agreed upon. For critiques, materials may be sent as Word or PDF attachments unless otherwise agreed upon.

Scheduling

All materials must be received on the agreed upon date, usually the day before we are scheduled to start work. Sending materials later than the specified date may delay the editor’s notes. If the editor needs more time, they will notify you no later than 48 hours before the due date. Scheduling is not complete until the agreed upon payment is received and you confirm that you agree to the terms.

Payment

Payment is accepted by PayPal, Venmo, and Stripe. For projects with fees less than $400, the whole fee is due at the time of booking. For all other projects, half of the fee is due when you schedule, and the other half is due before the editor sends back their notes. Alternately, you may choose to pay the whole fee up front. Payment plans and payment by check are available on a case-by-case basis. Contact us for details. When a project isn’t complete at the time of booking, we will base the fee (and deposit) on the estimated word count you provide, and then the second payment will be adjusted to cover any discrepancy.

Accommodations
We are happy to modify our editing process to accommodate disability, chronic illness, or other significant barriers to working with an editor. Some examples of previous accommodations we’ve made: different means of communication; only giving editorial notes that are actionable; and using fonts, colors, or file formats that are more accessible. These aren’t the only modifications we are willing to make; we are flexible and will work with each author to find solutions that meet their needs.

Discounts for marginalized authors

We have a limited number of scholarships available each year. Priority will be given to authors from historically marginalized communities and authors who have great financial need. Please ask for details.
