coaching & Consultations

consultationS

This option is perfect for a one-off specific concern. Some struggles Jeni has helped other clients with: deciding which publishing path is right for them; applying feedback from agents, critique partners, or beta readers; troubleshooting when something “just feels off;” and answering questions/ brainstorming solutions for specific issues with a story or craft technique (eg, “How do I fix this character arc?” or “I understand 3 act structure in general, but I’m not sure how to make it work in my story”). If you have a writing problem or question you can’t find a satisfactory answer to, a consultation is a great choice for you.

How it works

When you reach out, we will discuss your concerns a little through email to make sure we’re a good fit and this is the best option (as opposed to editing services). Then we will schedule a meeting over Zoom (other methods/platforms are available by request) at a time that works for both of us.

What it includes

Each hour-long session includes Jeni reading up to 2500 words of materials prior to your meeting. It may also include exercises, recommended resources, and/or a follow-up email as needed. Transcripts of Zoom calls are available but must be requested in advance.

Consultations are a flat $200 per hour.
Also available in half-hour increments.

Coaching PackageS

This option is for issues that need more attention than a one-hour session can provide. Some examples are coming up with a full revision plan before your next draft, determining best drafting practices for you, digging into the craft issues that have always given you problems, or figuring out what isn’t working with your story and how to fix it. Jeni can take a structured or intuitive approach, depending on the issue and the writer, and in your first session, will discuss with you to come up with a plan that works for you and your writing.

How it works

When you reach out, we will discuss your concerns through email to make sure we’re a good fit and this is the best option (as opposed to editing services). Because coaching is more in-depth, sometimes a quick 15-minute meeting is a better alternative. Jeni may suggest this, or you can request one. Once we are sure we’re a good fit and coaching is the best option, we will schedule the first full session over Zoom (other methods/platforms are available by request) at a time that works for both of us. At the end of the first session, we will decide how often we will meet (based on your schedule and support needs) and then schedule the next session. Each session will end with scheduling the next.

What it includes

Each hour-long session includes Jeni reading up to 2500 words of materials prior to your meeting and an email between sessions, as well as exercises and recommended resources as needed. Transcripts of Zoom calls are available but must be requested in advance.

Coaching packages start at $800

Why work with a book coach?

Sometimes we all need a little help. It could be you don’t know where to start with a new manuscript. Or you know what revisions to make but need help with the practical application on the page. Or maybe you just need some accountability and support. Whatever has you feeling stuck, rest assured that it’s part of the process and every writer you know has been there. An experienced book coach can help you move beyond what’s keeping you stuck and get back into the flow so you can focus on what’s most important: getting your story out into the world.

Who is a good fit for coaching?

Because I really believe in the coaching model, I truly think everyone is a good fit.

But not every coach is a good fit for every writer.

You’ll get the most from working with me if you:
• have already been working toward a long-term author career
• want to level up your writing and revising skills
• are looking for resources to improve your craft
• want to be as intentional as possible in how you grow

I learned early on in coaching that I am not good at helping writers get or stay motivated. I can help you work through obstacles, hold you accountable, and provide you resources, support, and encouragement–but the motivation has to come from you.

Do I need a full draft for book coaching?

It depends on your needs, but generally no.

Do you work with agented authors? What about self-publishing authors?

I work with authors at any stage and on any path to publication.

Not sure what you need?

Email me your questions and concerns. Together, we’ll figure out the best place to get started and come up with a plan that works for you. Still not sure? Head over to the Testimonials page to read about how I’ve helped other writers.

Discounts for marginalized authors

I have a limited number of scholarships available each year. Priority will be given to authors from historically marginalized communities and authors who have great financial need. Please ask for details.
